We have a Problem

More than ever teen anxiety is on the rise!

I have been a volunteered with our youth group for the last 6 years.   Repeatedly I hear about how much stress the kids, especially girls, in our program are facing.

I know so many girls who have faced or are facing major issues with anxiety.  Girls who look like they have it all are often times crumbling on the inside.

They are stressed about their future.

They are stressed about their grades.

When my older girls came to me complaining about how stressed they were, I have to admit that I downplayed it all.  My retort was often “what do you have to be stressed about?”  I struggled to see how my daughters who have all of their needs provided for, could face such intense stress.  But as the years have passed, I have talked to more parents, seen more things and I am starting to realize just how real this stress is.

The statistics are there.  Anxiety and depression are on the rise in teens.  Suicide rates as higher for teen girls than they have been in the last forty years.  Personally, I believe that part of the problem is that these girls are placing expectations on themselves that are unrealistic.

I don’t have any answers.  I am not a counselor, a therapist, a doctor or any other sort of professional.  I am a worried mom and I am an artist…  not really equipped to solve this problem.

I want to find out more.

I want to help others see the world as these girls see the world.  I want to give them a voice.

My Portrait Project

I am starting a project.  I want to make fine art images representing the pressure of perfection.  The stress that comes from trying to excel in every aspect of life.

If you are a girl between 13-18, I would love for you to answer my survey.  I would love to hear more about your story.  Also, if you are here in the Austin area and you would like to participate in the portrait side of my project, I would love to connect.

HERE is the link to the questionnaire.

HERE is another post about some of the problems I see teen girls struggling with.
